Finding a 14″ Mossberg 500 Front End

If you want to convert your Mossberg 500A (12 gauge) to a 14” barrel—legally, of course—you will need to order a total of eight front-end parts from Mossberg. Give Mossberg Customer Support a call at 1-800-363-3555 and order one each of the following:

  • 13488          Tube Nut 500A/835                                       $8.53
  • 11239P         M590/835 Mag Cap Parkerized                       $14.00
  • 12410P         Magtube M514 Parkerized                             $14.00
  • 12392P         Magazine Spring Retainer 590/835 Parkerized     $3.50
  • 12194          Spring, Magazine 835                                    $3.50
  • 12359           Forearm, M514                                           $20.00
  • 16033P         Bbl Asm 514Bead Hvy/w Parkerized               $100.00
  • 12362P         Action Slide Asm 500/514 Parkerized               $22.00

Prices listed above were current as of March 1, 2015. With shipping, the total was $196.56.

Recently, I heard that Mossberg now has a part number for the whole front end assembly: 92514. You can now call up and just give them that number, and it will get you one of everything on the list above.

You can then probably sell your original front end online for anywhere from $75 to $200—and recoup a significant part of your costs of upgrading to the uber-cool 14” front end. All NFA rules apply, of course.

  1. Card says:

For those interested, Mossberg 14″ barrel assemblies are currently going for $215.24 on Cheaper than Dirt.

  2. Tammy says:

    Good Evening Marty ,
Wanted to let you know ordered the 14 in front end from Buds on the 8th for 212 + 12 shipping arrived at my door today the 11th everything in perfect condition

  3. Thompson says:

Any updates, I want to order a kit from buds. I want on their website and they raised the price to $212 before shipping. I wonder if people are buying these up since the link was posted above?

    • marty says:

No update on our end. We haven’t received the kit we ordered from Bud’s as of yet. But as soon as we do, I’ll post a quick update in this message thread. Marty

  4. Clyde says:

Are these the same kits that Mossberg is offering again? If so they’re only $209 shipped from Bud’s Guns.

    • marty says:

      Hello Clyde,

I honestly don’t know. The part number is the same: 92514. However, it’s difficult to believe that Bud’s is selling these for $8.25 under dealer cost, which is $208.25 per kit plus $17.95 shipping. Maybe. But Bud’s would be losing money on each kit.

I placed a test order. If Bud’s comes through for $209 delivered, hell, I’ll be buying front end kits from Bud’s for resale. 😉 I’ll let you all know.

  5. Reddogg says:

Although I did not get a price breakdown as of yet I will update You all with it when I receive the Kit

    Hope this Helps

  6. JN says:

Is the action bar itself shorter than the standard, and does this affect compatibility with aftermarket forends?

    • marty says:

The action bar itself is the same length.. The length of the forend is 1″ shorter than the standard 500.

      Thank you for writing,

  7. Kevin says:

does mossberg have a 14″ 20 gauge barrel+magazine for the 500? if so, anyone know what the part numbers are?

  8. John says:

I ordered my front half on 11-16-15 and it was 259.13 shipped. I told the salesperson the prices listed here but she said the price was raised. Im assuming it is everything though follower, pump handle etc.

  9. james says:

THEY ARE AVAILABLE NOW!!!! go order your conversion kit

  10. Mike B says:

Called Mossberg today and thought I was in the money when I gave them the 92514 part number. She pulled it up on the computer and told me that it was unavailable due to being under legal review. However, she alluded to the fact they might become available soon. I would take for what its worth and not get your hopes up too high, but you never know.

  11. Steve says:

I happened to call them today about a different matter and asked them about the parts for this. The customer service rep said they require a class 3 for this now and that the parts are still not available.

  12. truenorth says:

You should be able to go to 14″ with no mag tube modifications.. just ergister the gun and hack the barrel in front of the lug.
If you want to go shorter.. unscrew the mag tube from the receiver.. cut into the crimps that secure the front plug.. cut deep enough to weakenthe crimp.
Drop a 1/2″ wood dowel rod down the tube and drive out the plug.
Shorten the mag tube to desired length (I suggest truing it in a lathe) and reinstall the front plug. I use Acur-Weld.. with black dye. It will hold it in place fine and will stand up to the heat of reblue, park or moly. Wait till after you solder the lug on before you epoxy it in place.. it fits tight enough nto the tube to stay in place.
Then heat the front lug on the barrel.. and knock it off the barrel. clean up the lug and move it back to the new desired location.
You will need to cut down the slide tube at this point so that it will allow the action to close.
Now here is a trick that took me a while to learn. The front lug is pot metal, and it will hold fine but it can NOT be cinched down tight against the mag tube. Get yourself a very thin shim. Make one out of 0.010″ brass stock.
Assemble the gun screw the lug to the mag tube and place the barrel on top of it.. close action and push back on the barrel as far as it will go. Mark the barrel where the lug will now reside.
Clean and prep the mating surface onthe barrel and lug.. flux them and using Brownells 450 deg ribbon silver solder between the lug and barrel.. reassemble the gun (don’t forget your brass shim) and with a propane or map torch heat the lug and barrel till the solder flows. ( personally I use heat-stop paste around the area Iam soldering to keep the heat from running down the barrel and down into the mag tube)
Clean up the excess solder.. heat paste and such..
When the form 1 comes back, hack off the barrel, true it up in the lathe, blast the barrel and tube and apply the finish of your choice Scrap the shim, reassemble and enjoy. there should be a tiny gap between the front of the mag tube and the rear of the recoil lug.. 0.004-0.005 is fine.

  13. Joe says:

I tracked down a 14″ barrel and matching magazine tube.
(I have another; start making friends with FFLs who get police trade-ins)
Other than the barrel and mag tube, are any other parts 14″ specific? I was planning on using a B+T railed fore end.

  14. Ty says:

Since mossberg has decided to not support our rights has anyone tried remington for a similar set up??

  15. JJ says:

Anyone having any luck sourcing the barrel somehow? Everything else is fairly straightforward but I’m in need of a source for a barrel.

  16. jeff says:

any word on a group buy? count me in

  17. Jeffro says:

Yeah, any group buy or other source to purchase the 14″ front end would be great. I finally just got a 500 cruiser, only to find out Mossberg got all wish-washy and stopped selling the kit to us. Will have to settle for the raptor grip only for now (which will still be an improvement).

  18. Jason says:

I called today and was informed that was no longer being sold to the public, count me in on a group buy if anyone can. thanks.

  19. Michael says:

Let me know when you sell the 14″front end kit. I’m in.

  20. Kenny says:

On March 30th you replied {You need to start out with a pistol-grip-only (PGO) 12-gauge firearm. It is serial numbered as a “firearm” not a “shotgun.”} Was just curious if these have always been serial numbered this way or only recently. I purchased a Mossberg 500 that came with pistol grip only back in March of 1984. Serial #J0092xx. Gunshop wrote it up as “Mossberg KPR-12 6-shot Blue 12 GA Shotgun” on the order receipt and “Mossberg KPR-12 Blue Riot 6-shot” on the paid-in-full receipt. Does this serial number coincide with what others are seeing nowadays? I’m sure the box is long gone but even if I did have it I don’t ever remember seeing any stickers or wording on it making mention of the PGO.

    • marty says:

      Hi Kenny,

I would send an email to Mossberg, asking them to respond with the configuration that the firearm was in when it left the factory. They have the records. And they should respond within one or two days.

      Let me know,

  21. Alex R says:

I’ve been contacting dealers in Canada to source parts. They don’t have the barrel length restrictions on shotguns like we do, so I’m hoping someone has one. If I have any luck I will post here.

Any leads Marty? Putting an order in for you grip shortly….

  22. gordon says:

what parts will they only sell to law enforcement? all of the parts or only the short barrel ?

  23. Jeff says:

I have a disatisfaction with Mossberg’s customer service. I ordered the 14″ conversion kit beginning of March over the phone, and had to wait 3-4 weeks until they shipped (due to production cycles only once per month). The price was right on as everyone else’s, but when I received the package, they forgot the magtube even though it was listed on the invoice. So when I called, they took care of it and said they would send it out the next day if possible. I called a week later to confirm the status and shipping and the rep said the part would not ship for 7-14 business days. I explained that this was for a missing part of my order and that the other rep would process it to ship as soon as possible, but was just told the same thing, it will take 7-14 business days.

    • Jeff says:

I should consider myself lucky after reading the comments about Mossberg not selling the conversion parts to the civilian market anymore. I originally ordered in March, and even though they forgot the magtube in my order, it’s better than the barrel which I probably would have issues getting.

  24. Kenny says:

Called Mossberg today (4/8/15) to order the 14″ Mossberg 500 front end. Gave the service rep the number above (92514) and he couldn’t pull it up. He asked me what it was and I told him the 8 piece kit for a 14″ Mossberg 500 front end. He said we no longer sell those parts to the general public, only to law enforcement customers. WTF? Anyone heard any different?

    • marty says:

      Hello Kenny,

I just heard this from another customer. Apparently, it’s some sort of new internal policy at Mossberg. It looks like we will have to begin purchasing these ourselves, so we can resell them to our law-abiding customers. Very disappointed in Mossberg.

      Thank you for writing,

      • Kenny says:

Thanks Marty, I’ll look forward to the day you have them for sale so I can get one.

      • jeff says:

hope the price remains the same . you should get a discount for buying in bulk i hope and that will cover your costs for labor 🙂 it would be awesome to buy the whole kit from you guys !!!!

        • marty says:

You’d be surprised at the “generous” margin Mossberg builds into their dealer pricing. On a $200 front end, we look to make perhaps $5. Wow, Mossberg. Really?!

      • Michael Blaski says:

Let me know when you sell them. I’m in.

      • Chris W says:

I’m interested in the 14″ front end as well. If there’s an update on a group buy, I’m in!

  25. freddy alvernia says:

As of April 1st Mossberg will not be selling any 92514 kits or 14″ barrels to civilians. Only to Military/LEO! This sucks because I had just committed to purchasing a Mossberg 590. Seems like the only way for me would be to go the NFA route.

    • marty says:

      Hello Freddy,

We just heard about this from another customer. Very disappointed in Mossberg. We are working to remedy the situation. Stay tuned.

      Thank you for writing,

  26. Arrkhal says:

Is it strictly necessary to get the action slide assembly? I’ve already got a (blued) 6-3/4″ one, and would probably have the whole front end refinished anyway. There’s about 3″ of space ahead of it on a 5-shot mag tube, so it should be the correct length.

  27. Carl Gierke says:

Now I’m confused. What I read said you need to start w/ a firearm which was never a shotgun, then people say they’re going to switch parts from their Mossberg 500 (serial numbered as a shotgun) to make the gun described. Don’t we need to start out w/ a receiver from the manufacturer which has never had a stock attached?

    • marty says:

      Hello Carl,

You need to start out with a pistol-grip-only (PGO) 12-gauge firearm. It is serial numbered as a “firearm” not a “shotgun.”

      Thank you for writing,

  28. Bruce says:

Follow up to my post on 2/13/15. I received my parts this week – about 2 1/2 weeks after ordering. The cost of the parts I received are exactly as listed above except for 12410P/Magtube M514 Parkerized which was $14.00 instead of $38.00. Total cost with shipping was 196.56. Parts look great.

    • marty says:

      Hi Bruce,

Thank you for the updated info. I also heard back from another customer. He said Mossberg now has a part number for the whole front end: 92514. You can just call up and give them that number and it will get you one of everything on the list. His price was $190 shipped. He’s a licensed manufacturer and buys from Mossberg regularly, so I don’t know if his price was a bit better than they will give others. But it’s worth trying.

      Thank you again,

      • Bruce says:

I forgot to add that the forearm assembly I received came with a hand strap already attached. I wasn’t sure if that was always the case in the past.

        • Bruce says:

Also, this has likely already been asked and answered here, but these parts do fit a 590 as well as the 500. I have both models and test fitted to both and it all fits up perfectly to both.

    • David says:

Unfortunately it looks like it went back up. When I ordered this morning the Magtube was $34, making the total w/shipping $220.48. I ordered the 92514, but the person taking the order had to input the parts individually.

  29. Bruce says:

I just ordered the group of parts and it was less than what was last reported in late 2014. My total with shipping was 196.56 I had the rep go down the list to verify the part numbers and price and the big drop was the mag tube. Everything else was the same or close within a dollar or two. We’ll see. Hoping it all works correctly.

  30. James says:

I am looking to purchase a forearm with a light or laser built in it. I am assuming that the 514 is shorter than the stock forearm. Do you have any recommendations?

  31. Aaron M says:

Also Marty, If I were to get the Mossberg 500 roadblocker is there anyway i could reinstall the roadblocker muzzle break onto the 14″ barrel?

  32. Aaron M says:

So will this 14″ barrel swap work on any mossberg 500?
